Recently, the team behind the popular Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1 Zigbee dongle has issued a recall for devices produced in the latest batch, citing a hardware defect. This issue stems from a faulty voltage regulator in certain devices, leading to the complete failure of the dongle when inserted into specific USB-A ports, particularly on desktop computers.
I previously recommended SkyConnect for its excellent Zigbee compatibility, and I still stand by it, as the SkyConnect dongles remain unaffected by this issue (SkyConnect and ZBT-1 are essentially the same device, except for a name change). However, ZBT-1 owners should be aware of the current situation and check if their device is part of the affected batch.
What Happened?
In a public announcement made on October 2, 2024, the Nabu Casa team behind Home Assistant acknowledged that the issue was caused by a defective voltage regulator. This problem was only found in a specific production run of ZBT-1 devices. The regulator overheats and bricks the dongle when inserted into certain desktop USB ports. Thankfully, the company has confirmed that SkyConnect—a nearly identical device—does not share this defect.
The company’s investigation traced the problem to the voltage regulator used during the manufacturing process, though it took time to reproduce the issue. The defect causes visible deformation on the ZBT-1 housing and results in failure, as shown in the provided images.

Immediate Response and Recall Plan
Sales of ZBT-1 have been paused, and all stock is being recalled from distributors. Replacements for the faulty devices are expected to be available by early November, and the company has offered a 60-month free replacement program for all affected customers. Regardless of whether the device has already failed, verified purchases will be eligible for a replacement.
To check if your device is affected, look for the label on the back indicating “ZBT-1.” You can continue using a functional device, but if you notice failure or deformation, contact the seller for a replacement.

My Recommendation
If you’re currently using the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1, I recommend inspecting your device as described above. If your device shows signs of failure, follow the company’s instructions for obtaining a replacement. For those who haven’t experienced any issues, continue using your device until replacement units become available.
As a long-time user of Home Assistant and Zigbee products, I know how integral these tools are to maintaining a stable smart home ecosystem. Rest assured, Nabu Casa is working to address the issue and is committed to providing long-term support to affected customers.
