The Unraid OS allows you to install a variety of additional software through the Apps tab in Unraid. You can install Docker-type apps (which I’ve already covered in my posts on productivity and management apps here and media management apps here).
Other than those, you can also find and install plugins through the same “Apps” tab in Unraid (accessible afterwards from the “Plugins” menu in Unraid). These plugins are small scripts that add functionality to the Unraid OS itself. Some of these are must-haves for any Unraid installation. Here are my top 10 recommended plugins:
1. Appdata Backup
This plugin is essential for backing up your appdata folder, which contains all the configurations and data for your Docker containers. It can also back up your SD card, which I highly recommend for extra security.
2. CA Auto Update Applications
Keeping your apps up-to-date is crucial for security and performance. This plugin automates the process, ensuring all your applications are always running the latest versions without any manual intervention.
3. Disk Location
If you have multiple disks, this tool is invaluable. It provides a graphical representation of your drives’ physical locations, making it easy to identify and replace a failed drive. No more guessing which drive needs attention.
4. Dynamix File Manager
This plugin enhances the built-in file manager, allowing you to delete, rename, copy, and move files and folders directly from the Unraid GUI. It’s a powerful utility that gives you full control over the file system right from your browser.
5. Dynamix System Statistics
Get real-time statistics on disk utilization, CPU usage, memory usage, interface bandwidth, and disk I/O bandwidth. This plugin provides critical system resource monitoring to help you manage and optimize your Unraid server’s performance.
6. CA Cleanup Appdata
Over time, you might uninstall Docker applications but leave behind unused appdata folders. This plugin scans your appdata share to identify and remove these redundant folders, keeping your system clean and organized.
7. Dynamix System Temperature
Monitor your system’s CPU and motherboard temperatures in real-time with this plugin. It says it requires compatible hardware and additional software drivers to function properly, but I had absolutely no problem running it and getting invaluable information right after installing it, without any added software.
8. Fix Common Problems
This diagnostic tool identifies and suggests fixes for common issues and configuration mistakes in your Unraid setup. It’s an essential plugin for maintaining a healthy and problem-free server.
9. FolderView
Organize your Dockers and VMs by grouping them into folders with this handy plugin. It’s especially useful if you’re like me and you have quite a lot of apps installed, I like to group mine into categories such as “Media”, “Productivity”, etc. It helps keep everything neatly organized and accessible.
10. Tips and Tweaks
This plugin allows you to adjust various Linux settings to improve your Unraid server’s performance. Even if you uninstall the plugin, the settings will remain effective until the server is rebooted.
Summary
These plugins are essential additions to any Unraid setup, enhancing functionality, improving performance, and providing vital management tools. I use those on my own personal system. Whether you’re backing up your data, organizing your applications, or monitoring system health, these plugins ensure your Unraid server runs efficiently and effectively. By integrating these tools into your system, you can maximize the potential of your Unraid server and maintain a streamlined, organized, and powerful home server environment.
